Coloring Gray Hair...
Why Gray is the New Black

Coloring Gray Hair - gray hair is the ultimate fashion statement. While some refer to gray hair as a "crown of glory", others think it is the best way to boast of the wisdom they have accumulated over the years.

Men traditionally don't color their gray hair as often as women, and their silver crown is commonly referred to as "distinguished", "noble" and "prestigious".

Women, however, are usually under much more scrutiny when they refrain from coloring gray hair and they are questioned repeatedly concerning their decision keep their hair gray.

No woman should feel any less beautiful just because she doesn't try to hide her gray hair.

In fact, some women admit regretting the decision of coloring their gray hair because they feel that they cheated themselves of a unique and one of a kind look.

Choices and Options for Coloring Gray Hair

Still not convinced that gray hair is the new black?

Here is a list of well known women who have chosen to skip the dye and showcase their silver shimmer:

  • Dame Judy Dench
  • Nichelle Nichols
  • Paula Deen
  • Dame Helen Mirren
  • Meryl Streep
  • Emmy Lou Harris
  • ... just to name a few.

Known for her silver streak, Stacey London from TLC's popular show, "What Not To Wear", jokes that she likes being referred to as "Rogue or Cruella De Vil."

A New Outlook?

  • Although it may not seem like it, not covering gray hair can have a negative psychological effect on some women. Sometimes, the decision to camouflage gray hair is a type of security blanket that can be difficult to part ways with.
  • Many have said that when they see the gray hair starting to creep into their tresses, they feel as if they will be written off as being old and unwanted. On the contrary, many who have stopped fighting nature say they feel as if they have a whole new outlook on life. They feel as if people respect them more when they're showing off their gray hair.

Makeup Choices

  • The makeup choices a woman makes when she decides against covering her gray hair are important because gray hair can sometimes make women look pale and washed out. Thankfully, this is easily remedied by choosing makeup colors that are pinker and more vibrant. You've probably been wearing neutral makeup for years, so now is the time to explore new looks.
  • Have you always been afraid of red lipstick? Well, now's your time to try it. If you don't usually wear makeup and you aren't sure what colors to wear, a quick color analysis can help you determine what colors will look best on you. Just remember that it is probably a good idea to still try and find colors that fall within your "color season". For many women, having gray hair gives them an entirely new outlook on life, so try having a new outlook on makeup and learn some new makeup techniques.

Be Confident With Your Decision...

With any decision you make, it is important to do it with confidence, and not just because it is trendy or the latest fad.

Most gray hair tends to have a coarser texture, and for this reason, it is a good idea to talk to your stylist about what product you should use to keep your gray hair looking its best. You also want to find a shampoo and conditioner that keeps your gorgeous gray from yellowing.

If you don't truly like the way you look, you will have a difficult time convincing others to appreciate your beauty. Don't let your gray hair hold you back any longer. If you don't like the way your hair looks while it is growing in at the roots, you may want to talk to your stylist about the possibility of dying all of your hair gray in anticipation. Or you could get a few gray highlights so you can "try before you buy".

Many gray haired beauties get back in touch with their roots (pun intended) because of the financial strain of the constant upkeep of covering gray hair.

Although coloring gray hair is right for some women, that doesn't mean it is the best choice for every woman. Whether it is a matter of personal preference, financial reasons or just to try out a new look, women who decide against coloring gray hair should rest assured that gray hair is only making them more beautiful than they already are.
