Osteoporosis Diet If you are working to prevent osteoporosis with medicines and exercise, you may be surprised to know that your diet could be making your condition worse.

Not eating the right foods can cause you to suffer from accelerated bone density loss, and many times, the foods we eat on a daily basis are actually making osteoporosis much worse.

Sometimes women feel that as long as they are taking medicine prescribed for osteoporosis or exercising on a regular basis, they are in the clear. However, the best way to handle osteoporosis is to combine several things.

When you are not relying on one treatment to help the situation, you will have a better chance of preserving your bone health. As you learn more about the effects that osteoporosis can have on the body, it is crucial to develop a balanced osteoporosis diet that will hinder additional bone density loss.

Let's Start With The Basics

  • Are you addicted to caffeine? You may be surprised to know that caffeine is one of the main enemies of an osteoporosis diet. While you don't have to totally eliminate caffeine from your diet, it is a good idea to limit your caffeine intake to no more than two cups of caffeine a day.

    Though you may not be a coffee drinker, keep in mind that coffee is not the only drink that contains caffeine. Many sodas and teas have significant amounts of caffeine, so be sure to avoid drinking excessive amounts of those drinks as well.

    Soda actually has two strikes against it when it comes to developing an acceptable diet because many soda drinks contain phosphates, which hinder the body's ability to be able to absorb calcium.
  • If you read food labels in the grocery store, you will probably be appalled by the large amounts of sodium we consume on a daily basis. While salt may make food taste good, it's not doing anything good for our bones. In fact, as you develop your diet plan, it is a good idea to drastically reduce your daily sodium intake. Even if you are getting enough calcium every day, sodium causes most of the calcium to leave your body with your urine.

    Although they know it's unhealthy for them, most people refuse to lower their sodium intake because they are worried that they will have to eat flavorless food. Instead of choosing the foods with highest amounts of salt, try seasoning your food with flavorful herbs and spices. You will probably be surprised just how full of flavor your new osteoporosis diet actually is!
  • While eating too much protein is bad, not getting enough protein can damage the bones. Since our bones are half protein, eating protein helps to strengthen and nourish them. Adequate amounts of protein is an essential part of your osteoporosis diet, and by avoiding all forms of protein, you are hurting your bones.

    If you are not sure how much protein you should be eating on a daily basis, be sure to ask your doctor or nutritionist to provide you with a balanced diet plan. Following a diet plan will help you to have clear guidelines to follow, and when you have nutrition guidelines to follow, you will have an easier time staying healthy.

It's Never Too Late To Change A Habit

    It is never too early to begin a healthy osteoporosis diet. Sometimes women who are not nearing the menopausal age feel that they can cheat the system and start eating correctly once they turn 50.

    It is important to remember eating an unbalanced diet for many years can actually contribute to the development of osteoporosis. Instead of waiting to eat the right types of foods, try to develop great eating habits before osteoporosis ever has a chance to develop in your body.

    Although you may have an adjustment period as you learn more about your osteoporosis diet, remember that you can do anything you set your mind to, and before you know it, your body will be craving foods that help to strengthen your bones.
