Osteoporosis Warning Signs - Osteoporosis, also known as the "silent disease" is dangerous because its symptoms can go undetected until it is too late to do anything. Unlike other illnesses, osteoporosis is characterized by a significant loss in bone density.
When the bones are less dense, they are weaker, and weak bones are a recipe for disaster. Those who suffer from osteoporosis, not only feel weak, but their entire quality of life is affected by the disease. As a woman, it is important to be able to recognize the osteoporosis warning signs so that you can take action steps to strengthen your bones.
Early Warning Signs To Watch For
- One sign of the disease is a slump in the back and shoulders. This occurs because osteoporosis targets the vertebrae in the back and causes them to become weakened. As a result of the bone density loss, those who suffer from the disease lose the ability to be able to hold their backs up straight.
- Aside from a slump, another sign is a loss of height. While it may seem improbable that anyone could actually get shorter, it is very possible. With spinal osteoporosis, the bones in the spine can become compressed and cause women to lose up to an inch or more of height.
- Although you've probably experienced back pain at some point in your life, constant back pain is usually one of the osteoporosis warning signs.
Because of the bone density loss, those who suffer from osteoporosis have a tendency to experience both upper and lower back pain.

- While osteoporosis can be caused by naturally occurring circumstances it is also possible that our habits can cause us to develop this condition. Smoking, excessive drinking and poor diet habits can cause some women to develop osteoporosis.
Smoking is dangerous because it prevents calcium from being absorbed. You only get one set of bones, so it's important to do everything in your power to keep them strong and healthy.
- Sometimes bad habits are not the only things that make some women more susceptible to developing osteoporosis. Those who are naturally thin and have fewer muscles to support their bones are prone to develop osteoporosis more often than those who have muscles to support their bones. Women who take certain prescription medications are more susceptible to experiencing bone weakness as well.
- Muscular aches and bone sensitivity/tenderness are other osteoporosis warning signs. Although some muscle pain is a natural part of life, if you are constantly experiencing muscle aches, and bone pain, you may be experiencing some of the osteoporosis warning signs.
If you have noticed these osteoporosis warning signs, it is important to talk to your doctor and see what steps you should take to promote stronger bones. Many women have found ways to still live normal and full lives with their osteoporosis. If you have osteoporosis warning signs, you shouldn't feel as if your life has to be boring or unexciting. In fact, as you learn to deal with your osteoporosis, you will probably be more active as you learn how to stay active in order to combat this condition.
